What Insomnia Actually Feels Like
Sleep problems rarely show up as one clean thing. More often it’s a cluster of exhausting patterns that feed each other, night after night.
Exhausted but wired
Bone-tired all day, then oddly alert the second your head hits the pillow.
The 3 a.m. wake-up
You fall asleep fine, then snap awake in the dark and can’t get back down.
Bedtime dread
You start bracing for a bad night hours before it arrives.
The racing mind
Tomorrow’s list, today’s replay, the worry that won’t switch off.
Watching the clock
Counting the hours of sleep you have left, which only wakes you up more.
It bleeds into everything
Focus, mood, patience, health. All of it running on empty.
The cruel part of insomnia is the loop: bad nights create anxiety about sleep, and that anxiety creates more bad nights. When you can’t sleep, worrying about it becomes the thing keeping you awake. Breaking that loop is exactly what this therapy targets.
The Most Effective Treatment for Chronic Insomnia Isn’t a Pill
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the approach sleep research consistently ranks first-line for chronic insomnia. It often helps where sleep aids only mask the problem, because it retrains the systems that fell out of rhythm. The work is structured, practical, and built around your real life.
Resetting the sleep-wake system
Practical changes that rebuild your body’s natural sleep drive and timing.
Quieting the racing mind
Cognitive tools for the worry and clock-watching that keep you up at night.
Breaking the bed-anxiety loop
Retraining your brain to associate bed with sleep instead of dread.
Untangling sleep from mood
When anxiety or depression is driving the insomnia, we work on both sides at once.
What Changes When It Starts Working
- Falling asleep faster, without the hour of tossing
- Staying asleep, and getting back down when you do wake
- Less dread at bedtime, more trust that sleep will come
- Steadier days: focus, mood, and energy that don’t hinge on one perfect night
Everyone’s sleep story is different, and no honest therapist promises a switch will flip. What CBT-I offers is a track record: it targets the root of insomnia rather than covering the symptoms.
From First Call to Better Nights
A clear path from the first call to a plan that fits your life. No guessing where things stand.
Reach out
Call (630) 474-1006 or send a note through the contact form.
Brief intake call
Often the same day, to understand what your nights actually look like.
Matched to your clinician
Based on what’s driving the sleep problem, not just who has an opening.
First session
Understanding your sleep, not judging it. Patterns, history, what you’ve already tried.
A plan built around your actual life
Your CBT-I plan accounts for work schedules, kids, caffeine, all of it.
A focused course
Usually a matter of months, not open-ended therapy that drifts.
Not sure whether it’s insomnia or just a rough season? The intake call is where we figure that out together.
Book an AppointmentSigns It’s Time to Get Help for Your Sleep
- Sleep trouble three or more nights a week, for a month or longer
- Sleep aids that stopped working, or that you’d rather not rely on
- Sleep problems tangled up with anxiety, stress, or low mood
- Exhaustion that’s affecting work, relationships, or health
If two or more of these sound familiar, insomnia therapy is worth a conversation.
What We Treat, and When to See Someone Else
We treat the behavioral and psychological side of sleep: insomnia, sleep anxiety, and the sleep problems that ride along with stress and low mood. That’s what CBT-I is built for. Here’s the honest picture of where it fits.
Sleep therapy (CBT-I): what we do
Retrains the habits and thought patterns driving insomnia and works on the anxiety-sleep loop. Drug-free, structured, and focused on skills you keep.
Sleep medication
Can help in the short term, but often masks the cause rather than resolving it. CBT-I targets the root. We don’t prescribe or manage medication, and CBT-I can run alongside whatever your doctor has you on.
A sleep physician: when to go
If you snore heavily, stop breathing during sleep, have restless legs, or a suspected medical sleep disorder such as sleep apnea or narcolepsy, that calls for a medical sleep evaluation first. We’ll gladly point you in the right direction, and CBT-I can often help alongside that care.

Sleep Therapy: Common Questions
How is CBT-I different from sleep hygiene tips?
Sleep hygiene is a small piece of the picture. Good habits matter, but they rarely resolve chronic insomnia on their own. CBT-I is a structured, evidence-based insomnia therapy that retrains the sleep system itself, along with the thoughts keeping you awake. Our guide to sleep hygiene covers the basics; this page covers what to do when the basics aren’t enough.
Do I have to stop sleep medication to start therapy?
No. We don’t prescribe or manage medication. CBT-I works alongside whatever your doctor has you on, and many people choose to reduce sleep aids later with their doctor’s guidance.
How long until I sleep better?
It varies by person and by how long the insomnia has been running. CBT-I is a focused course of therapy, usually a matter of months rather than something open-ended.
Can therapy help if my insomnia comes from anxiety or depression?
Yes. When sleep and mood are tangled together, we treat both. Many clients start with anxiety therapy or depression therapy and find their sleep is part of the same work.
Do you take my insurance?
We’re in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, and Medicare, and we’ll help you check your coverage before your first session.
Do you offer telehealth for sleep therapy?
Yes. You can meet in person at our Naperville office or by secure Illinois telehealth. CBT-I translates well to online sessions.
