What is a caregiver?
A caregiver is someone who gives care (part-time/full-time) to a person in need. This type of care can include transportation, grocery shopping, medical assistance, preparing meals, etc. Some caregivers fall under the category of family members (spouses, children, siblings, etc.), and some can be friends or even people employed as caregivers. Caregivers can work part time, and they may work around the clock, or even live with the one they are caring for.
Why is it important for caregivers to take care of themselves?
Sometimes when caring for others it may be hard for the caregiver to remember to care for themselves. A carer may get busy caring and forget their own appointments or responsibilities. This may increase stress for the carer and in turn cause a feeling of burnout. Caregivers may also find themselves feeling guilty when attempting to take time to themselves in the midst of caring for their family member, friend, or patient. In order to provide good care, and avoid burnout, a carer must take care of themselves.
Ways for caregivers to receive care
Reach out for support from family and friends: Talking with family and friends daily can really make a difference.
Find a support group: Caregivers may face the feeling of isolation; support groups can help caregivers not feel alone.
Get adequate rest: Sleep is a necessity, and quality sleep is so important. Winding down before bed and avoiding distractions can be helpful.
Prioritize what is most important: Do not be afraid to say no. Caregivers usually have a busy schedule, make sure to be available for things that you find most important.
Practice self-care: Take time to do things you love and enjoy whether that be, listening to music, putting time into loved hobbies, or spending time with family.
Take care of your needs: Make sure you are looking after your own health. This can look different for everyone. Make sure you are getting a nutritional diet, paying attention to how you are feeling psychically and mentally, and making your own health related appointments a priority.
Reach out if you need help: Sometimes the caregiver may need to be cared for as well. Reach out to a professional when necessary. Learn more about therapy for caregivers.
Give yourself grace: Caring for another is not an easy task. Do not be too hard on yourself.
