The Power of Routine

By Shelby Ruman, MS, LPC

Daily routines play a powerful and underestimated part in overall mental health. Now, I know you may be thinking – that routines are boring and can make life mundane, and to some extent you may be right. I imagine if we created routines where we did the same exact things every day it would be boring, but a base routine doesn’t have to be. The structure and predictability of daily habits can enhance our mood, aid with stress levels, and help with overall functioning. Afterall there is a reason the birds go to bed and wake up at around the same time every day.

In a world that is full of unpredictability and many unknowns, structure can help us know what is next. Stability helps reduce anxiety because the mind is not constantly trying to adapt to uncertainty. Knowing what to expect in our routine each day allows the brain to relax, conserving mental energy for more important tasks.

Having a sleep routine is not only good for enhancing sleep, but also our mental health. If we go to sleep and wake up at around the same time every day we help regulate our internal clock. This means that with structure, our body will be more apt to wind down and wake up at the structured times we put in place.

Structure can also improve our productivity and reduce stress. Sometimes having an outline of the day makes tasks easier to complete. Instead of wondering what is next, a routine makes a clear path for us to follow and alleviate potential decision fatigue. A concise outline of the day or week can be particularly helpful during busy periods because it allows us to stay focused and be efficient.

A routine can also pave the way to healthier habits. When we have an outline, we can set aside or find time for healthier habits. Any healthy activities like exercise, relaxation, or a balanced diet are easier to follow long term if they are set into a routine. Also, putting aside time for hobbies or socializing can reduce feelings of isolation and improve overall happiness.

Now obviously we can not always stick 100% to our routine, it just isn’t possible. Things may happen either good or bad that will force up to pivot. For example, if we’re on vacation or we end up getting sick, we may need to change up our routine. Being able to pivot in times of the unpredictable is just as important as sticking to a routine. So if your routine is not perfect, or you stray away from it for a little bit, do not worry! And remember routines are a guideline, not a strict rule. Having an overly strict schedule can lead to frustration or a sense of failure when things don’t go as planned. Give yourself grace and know that you are human and humans are not perfect.
