What is a letter to your younger self?
A letter to your younger self can sometimes be as simple as it sounds. It is quite literally a letter
to yourself when you were younger. This letter is meant to be a cathartic or therapeutic exercise
that can help someone process things they’ve been through, appreciate how far they’ve come,
or express emotions easier. Sometimes a letter to a younger self can give a person closure after
a tough period in their life. Writing a letter to a younger self can help someone appreciate all of
the things they've been through, good or bad. It can also help share wisdom people have
learned and be a reminder that they are not alone.
Why do we write these letters?
There are many reasons why people write letters to their younger selves. Sometimes it might be
an exercise suggested by a counselor. Letters to younger selves can also be a good way for
people to process grief or loss. Another use for letters to a younger self can be to reflect on
things like progress, tough times, great times, or any type of life transition.
How do we write these letters?
Writing a letter to a younger self can be very customizable. A person can write this letter with a
goal or purpose in mind, or it can be very free-flowing. It may be helpful to pick a certain age of
yourself to write to (ex: 12 year old you, teenage you, you in your 20’s, etc.). Sometimes it may
also be helpful to address yourself at a tough time in life (ex: divorce, job change, break-up, loss
of a loved one, etc.). Another rule of thumb is to write positively. This exercise is meant to
promote growth and positivity. Don’t be harsh on yourself, the human experience is unique and
has a lot of ups and downs!
Where to start when writing a letter to your younger self?
A good rule of thumb to start this type of letter is to address it to yourself. Some people grow up
with a childhood nickname and like to throw that in there, others use their full name or a
shortened version. Some people start with where they are now and how far they’ve come.
Others may open with advice or wisdom to give to their younger self. Some people like to start it
on a serious note, and some people may throw in some humor. Starting the letter really just
depends on the person.
Some words of encouragement to get started.
– Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable and honest.
– You are worthy of being loved.
– You are strong for what you’ve been through.
– You are unique in your own way.
– Remember to be kind to yourself, for we are only human.
A short example
Dear younger me,
Don’t give up. Life has a lot to offer and you’re just getting started. Remember how we
thought we’d be a famous athlete? Well, we’re not. But don't worry, we are happier than ever.
Yes, you finally got your dream dog, and we named him mike. We love Mike. Remember how
we thought we’d never make it out of high school? Well we did, and we were being dramatic,
let's be honest. Keep your head up, everything seems like it will not pass, but trust me it does, I
am the proof.
Love,
Me
